In Austria, around 800,000 disposable cups are disposed of every day. This corresponds to a resource consumption of 34 million kilowatt hours of energy or the annual electricity consumption of 9,000 Austrian households. Expressed in quantities of wood, this would be about 4,500 trees.1
Unfortunately, however, the resource consumption for production is only part of the ecological burden caused by disposable cups, because in fact only a small proportion of disposable cups can be recycled. Even if the recycled cups end up in the yellow garbage can or paper waste, not all of the paper can be recycled because the paper fibers adhere very well to the plastic coating. Apart from the paper, which can be detached, the remaining parts of the disposable cup are basically disposed of with the residual waste.2
The Uni Graz coffee-to-go cup
In the snack machine, right next to the hot drink machine, you can buy the coffee-to-go cup of the University of Graz. The coffee-to-go cup is also available in the university store.
To ensure that you use your coffee-to-go cup regularly, we have chosen a cup that stands out from simple reusable cups due to its design: the Uni Graz coffee-to-go cup is made of 40% recycled disposable cups (BPA and melamine free), is dishwasher safe, light in weight, 100% drip-proof and keeps your drink warm for 60 to 90 minutes. With 230 ml, the coffee-to-go cup is just the right size and therefore not only lies really well in the hand, but also fits into the hot beverage vending machines at the University of Graz as well as into all common hot beverage vending machines.
Of course, the most environmentally friendly way is to use your own coffee-to-go cup, which you already have at home anyway. However, if you have used the Uni Graz coffee-to-go cup 10 to 25 times, it is ultimately also more environmentally friendly than a disposable cup.3
